Taylor Swift on the cover of Seventeen Magazine May Issue

On putting personal emotions in her songs: “Writing songs about people is the only way I know how to do things. I mean, I can’t wish I hadn’t written a song about someone, because if I hadn’t, that song wouldn’t exist. I just don’t find any joy in writing about things I haven’t been through.”

On the subjects she likes to write about: “Right now, my favorite thing to write about is love. And breakups. And boys. And feelings. Honesty is a big part of my writing, because when I was younger and fell in love with songs I’d hear, I would always wonder who that song was about. It would have totally broken my heart to know it wasn’t about anyone and was just written so it could be on the radio.”

On who she considers her best friends: “In Nashville, it’s Abigail [who's mentioned in Taylor's song "Fifteen"], and Kellie Pickler. In L.A., Selena Gomez is one of my best friends. I’m also really close with Miley [Cyrus], Demi Lovato, and Emma Stone.”

On how it feels to have “So What” become the break-up anthem of the year and also her first number one song: It feels very confusing. It’s bittersweet. It’s funny, it’s empowering, it’s ‘Screw you,’ it’s all of that. It’s amazing to be number one but it’s ironic that it took [Carey Hart and I] breaking-up to get there. It’s a testament to how often people break-up, because everyone can relate to what I’m saying.

On if she’s over Carey: It’s up and down. You have strong moments and you have weak moments. But it’s not just been devastating - it’s been freedom, too. I told him that I would give him away at his next wedding.

On where her “meanness” comes from: My brother and I fought alot when we were kids. We were very violent. He could always beat me physically but I could always beat him with words. And you learn how to survive by how you are as a kid and can just be really mean. I can cut people down. I don’t like to. I don’t want to be like that anymore.”

Producer Adam Shankman had this to say about this look: “When he first turns 17, he’s got this old 1989 haircut that is not the cutest Zac you’ve ever seen. But he is quite shirtless in much of the movie, which the female fans are going to be quite happy with because the boy has been working quite hard on it.

Zac Efron takes costar Leslie Mann for a spin around the dance floor in this new movie still for 17 Again. Mann,plays the wife of Efron,and costar Matthew Perry. Efron and Perry play the same character (Mike O’Donnell)–just at different times.


Says Zac, “The idea of going back to high school as an adult is incredible…until you actually get there! It’s like this crazy twilight zone of adolescent insecurities and people trying to grow up and figure out what they want to do with their lives. It’s crazy in the movie. Nothing comes out right when you’re a teenager. You say the wrong thing. You just do. It’s a part of life. It’s a part of growing up. One of the funny parts of this movie is that every year kids change—youth culture is changing all the time. Even now, when I go back to a high school campus, it really is like a frighteningly new place!”

On breaking up with Stephen Colletti:
“I just knew I wanted to breathe. I wanted to be single at the time. It just hit me like a ton of bricks: This is the time I need to be with myself. It takes such a secure person to be with someone like me—it takes so much confidence; it takes so much trust.”

On wanting to be girly and just have fun:
“If I was a wonderful person, I’d run around in whatever clothes and have one outfit – and then I’d donate the rest of the money to charity. But no one is perfect, and no one is saying you have to give up everything in your life to change the world.”

On what it was like fighting whalers in Japan:
“It was great! There’s very little that scares me. I’ve always been a physical person. And I feel like a lot of time in this industry, a lot of people loan their face to a cause, which is great, but it doesn’t do as much as getting out there and actually physically doing something.
